  17. <p>     The frightened New York City subway passengers on the
  18. Brooklyn-bound local said later they knew there was something
  19. wrong when their train overshot several station platforms. As
  20. it hurtled toward the busy Union Square Station at 12:15 a.m.,
  21. the train derailed on a curve and slammed into a steel pillar,
  22. leaving several cars a mass of twisted metal in a hot,
  23. smoke-filled tunnel. "When the lights went off, smoke started
  24. coming into the car," said passenger Gilbert Asante. "I thought
  25. I was dead."
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     Asante was one of the lucky ones. Five riders were killed
  28. and nearly 200 injured. Motorman Robert Ray, 38, who fled the
  29. scene, was later captured and charged with five counts of
  30. manslaughter. Blood tests showed two times the legal limit of
  31. alcohol in his system.
